Could Concentrating Solar Power Save Humanity? CSP technology has been called “the technology that will save humanity.” While that may be a grand statement, CSP could meet up to 7% of the world’s projected electricity needs in 2030, and 25% by 2050, according to CAP. California’s SEGS power plants were the first to demonstrate utility-scale CSP power starting in the 1980′s, and currently produce 310 megawatts (MW) of electricity at 5.57 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) – enough to cheaply power 250,000 homes. In addition, Arizona’s Solana plant and California’s Ivanpah project will soon come online and produce more than 600MW of reliable power.

Unlike solar photovoltaic or wind generation, CSP electricity is generated by heat, meaning excess output can be stored for later use and relied upon by grid operators without intermittency concerns. Storing heat energy is also 20 to 100 times more cost-effective than storing electricity in batteries, with energy-conversion efficiencies already exceeding 90%

The electricity from our sockets could soon come from a high-tech device flying in the sky. The innovative research project to generate wind energy with the aid of a kite won over the "Venture Kick" jury; it is providing CHF 10,000 of support for the Empa spin-off "TwingTec". A kite, a reel and a console. These are the components of a pioneering new method for generating energy. The research and development project being carried out by Empa, the University of Applied Sciences Northwest Switzerland, the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich) and the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), combines the basic concept of a kite with innovative technology.

The aim: to make electricity from the wind. That in itself is nothing new; electricity is already being produced by wind turbines, yet these only reach heights of around 100 metres. With the "Twing" from Empa, stronger and more regular wind currents at up to three hundred metres are "tapped".
A workgroup of the university of Delft is creating electricity with a kite. They were testing on the Dutch island Texel. You see several launches of the kite, one from the ground and two with the help of a blimp. The tests are part of the 'Laddermill' project by Wubbo Ockels, which aims to create energy from wind more efficiently than windmills.

When it comes to computing, the "cloud" may rain efficiency benefits. Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Northwestern University unveiled a modeling tool yesterday that estimates the energy savings of moving your digital life -- your photos, videos, emails and documents -- off your phones and desktops and into the server farms that make up the cloud. The tool, available to the public online, is called the Cloud Energy and Emissions Research Model (CLEER). It aims to give scientists a better understanding of how energy use changes as the world moves away from storing and processing information in individual phones, laptops and workstations and moves toward outsourcing these tasks to centralized facilities.

Late last Friday, grid operator California ISO (Cal-ISO) announced the state set an all-time solar record just before 1:00 pm when it registered 2,071 megawatts (MW) worth of solar electricity system-wide.

This record equaled 5% of Friday’s peak demand of 36,000 MW, was enough to power 1.5 million average California households, and is just under the 2,250MW of nuclear power removed from the state grid when the San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station was retired. Even more remarkable, Friday’s output doubled the record set in September 2012 when solar peaked at 1,000 MW total generation.

Renewable energy investments are shifting to developing nations as countries from Morocco to Chile pursue power sources that wean them off fossil fuel imports, two studies promoted by the United Nations said. China’s $67 billion of investment in wind, solar and other renewable projects led developing nations to $112 billion of spending in 2012, according to an e-mailed statement today from the UN and other groups involved in the studies. That compares with $132 billion of expenditure in the industrialized world.

The gap on renewables spending between richer and developing countries shrank to 18 percent last year from 250 percent in 2007, marking a “dramatic change” in investment patterns, the statement said. Two-thirds of the 138 nations that now have clean-energy targets are in the developing world.

The U.S. Department of Energy has just unveiled a floating off-shore wind platform that it thinks could make a big splash.

But it has already been working hard to commercialize “tidal energy” that uses underwater turbines to create electricity, which must then be wired into the grid.

Wave and tidal facilities are being tested. One such “wave” project has begun off the shores of Oregon, where underwater turbines using 10 buoys will generate 1.5 megawatts of power. Impediments to further growth are wide ranging and cover such issues as the preservation of aquatic resources, water quality and the maintenance of marine life. In the end, regulators — who are trying to diversify the nation’s energy mix with green fuels — have concluded that energy from the ocean is a valued part of the plan and that it is more predictable than wind or solar.

For solar energy to become so cheap that it can compete with coal and oil, its deployments needs to be greatly scaled up.

The US throws out 250 million tons of garbage a year. Roughly a third is recycled, and the rest is landfill. You might think that’s a problem. But one man’s trash is another’s treasure. Oslo, Norway burns rubbish to power and heat homes, and they’ve run out. The city imports trash from Sweden, Ireland, England—and they wouldn’t mind taking on a few tons from the US. And it’s not just Oslo. Northern Europe’s trash burning capacity outstrips its trash producing capacity by 550 million tons. Neighboring Sweden imports 800,000 tons of trash annually to make energy. Norway, Austria, and Germany are also getting in on the game. In total, 40 countries worldwide burn trash for energy.

The state’s largest power-buying consortium is entering the solar energy market, starting with four local colleges and schools that will add solar arrays to their properties. PowerOptions of Boston, which uses the buying power of the consortium to negotiate electricity and natural gas prices for nonprofit and public organizations, will partner with SunEdison, a Missouri-based solar services company. SunEdison, which will build the solar arrays over the summer, will own and maintain the installations and sell the power to the schools and colleges.

But the bulk of the book is hands-on: the nuts-and-bolts of siting; foundations; flooring; living (plant-covered) roofs; and cob, cordwood, straw-bale and modified stick frame walls—although the book's minimal treatment of electricity and plumbing, and how to integrate them with unfamiliar materials like cob or straw-bale, disappoints. Snell's tendency to decry the sins of modern architectural practice can become exasperating, but doesn't diminish the value of his extensive experience-derived knowledge; and the grace and beauty of the authors' building project, featuring Callahan's fine finish work, is inspiring.

The abundance of color photos detailing the construction process, supplemented by examples from indigenous buildings around the world, is particularly helpful. (Jan.)
